The Ward Plaza, now a designated Historic Landmark, was originally built by Alonzo Ward in 1894. Following a devastating fire in 1926, Mr. Ward decided to rebuild. In 1928, he opened the new Ward Hotel as South Dakota's premier luxury regional hotel featuring 90 hotel rooms, a grand ballroom, a restaurant, coffee shop and commercial spaces.

In 2004, Blackstone Developers accepted the task of completely restoring the property. In full compliance with South Dakota's Historic Preservation Office with design and guidance by Minnesota state and national award winning architectural firm of  Barbour/Ladouceur Architects, 15 luxury upscale contemporary condominiums were constructed on the upper four floors replacing the former ninety hotel rooms. The original ball room , lobby, restaurant and kitchen, bar and commercial spaces were all rebuilt as part of the multi million dollar restoration completed in 2007. 

In addition to the 15 spacious luxury condominium/residences, averaging over 1300 sq ft, The Ward Plaza now houses the Roma Ristorante full service Italian restaurant and bar, the Tuscany room (available for meetings and special events), a women's boutique and a film studio.
